Sunflower (Latin: Helianthus annuus) is an annual or perennial plant of the family Asteraceae. It is identified by its large flower head with bright yellow ray florets giving it a sun-like appearance. The plant can grow to over 2 meters in height. The flower holds an abundance of smaller and darker leaves in the very middle. Sunflowers produce popular seeds which help lower blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar.
Sunflower oil is made by cleaning, pounding, squeezing and extracting unrefined petroleum from the seeds followed by refining the oil to remove impurities. Sunflower oil is mostly used as a cooking oil, but is also used as medicine and to treat high cholesterol.
Sunflower seeds thrive in hotter climates with full sun. They grow well in higher temperatures, around 21-29 degrees celsius. The plant can adapt to any type of soil as long as it isn’t drowning in water.
Sunflowers originate in America and specifically in the Northern and Central part of America. Furthermore, commercialization of the plant took place in Russia.
