Pecans (Latin: Carya illinoinensis) are seeds produced from trees of the family Juglandaceae. The tree produces edible nuts valued for their healthy monounsaturated fats. Furthermore, the healthy fats contained in the nuts have been shown to improve immune system functioning, reduce inflammation. Pecan trees are large and require a lot of area. On average, each tree can grow up to 30 meters tall with a spread of 12-20 meters. The trees grow best in long, hot, and humid climates. The tree is native to Mexico and Southern USA, primarily in Georgia and Texas. . Pecan domestication and commercialization did not occur till the late 1800's. Today, together the USA and Mexico account for over 90% of the world's pecan production.
