A bean is the seed of one of several genera of the flowering plant part of the Fabaceae family. There are tens of thousands of bean varieties, however only a fraction of which are mass produced for consumption. Beans display a profound array of colors, textures and tastes, and plants differ from bushes to climbing vines, annual or perennial.
Faba bean also known as the broad bean (Latin: Vicia faba) is a flowering plant of unknown origin. The legume crop is grown primarily for its edible seeds. The bean originated from the Middle East in the prehistoric period and is now cultivated around the world.
Beans can grow in a variety of climates. Some take only months from sowing to harvest, while others can take several years before producing grains. Soil conditions and rainfall requirements vary depending on the plant.
Most varieties originate in the Neotropics where beans were domesticated thousands of years ago.
