A bean is the seed of one of several genera of the flowering plant part of the Fabaceae family. There are tens of thousands of bean varieties, however only a fraction of which are mass produced for consumption. Beans display a profound array of colors, textures and tastes, and plants differ from bushes to climbing vines, annual or perennial.
The white bean also known as the navy bean is a variety of the common bean. It is produced from the green bean plant which is a bush or vine type depending on the cultivar. The plant typically produces pods that yield 5-6 seeds each. Full sunlight is required in well drained, slightly acidic soil to produce good yields.
Beans can grow in a variety of climates. Some take only months from sowing to harvest, while others can take several years before producing grains. Soil conditions and rainfall requirements vary depending on the plant.
Most varieties originate in the Neotropics where beans were domesticated thousands of years ago.
