Barley (Latin: Hordeum vulgare), is an annual cereal grain plant part of the poaceae grass family. It is a tall grass with a hairy stem which stands tall and produces spikelets at the head. The stem supports the head which contains grains. Each spike typically produces 20–60 grains.
Inexpensive and easy to grow, barley is a widely adaptable and tolerant crop. It only takes 3 days to germinate and has a short growing season. Impressively, it also can produce more biomass in a shorter time than any other cereal crop making it a very popular crop to grow.
Barley is believed to have domesticated in Western Asia, and near the Nile river of northeast Africa. The earliest record of wild barley comes from modern day Iraq, Mesopotamia.
